Visit to Stanhope - Miss Draycott

Last Tuesday, Miss Gunn, Miss Davis and I visited the EYFS department at Stanhope Primary School in Gedling. It was very useful to spend some time discussing with their EYFS lead the changes that they have made recently to improve their EYFS setting and to see these in action. It was reassuring to see that their environment had the same ethos as ours and that their weekly timetable was also very similar. We were pleased that our GLD scores matched theirs over the past few years, despite the more diverse nature of our school. Many photographs were taken of their fantastic resources and outdoor provision and ideas were taken from their displays which have already been implemented in all three classrooms.

Phonics Workshop - Miss Garforth

On Tuesday evening I ran a phonics workshop aimed at parents from FS and KS1. The aim of the meeting was to inform parents of why and how we teach phonics at JC and how best to support their children at home.

The session was split into two parts-

1. A presentation about phonics and what it looks like at JC. Including a new video of some of our children modelling pure sounds.

2. Taking part in phonics activities and games and lots questions.

Although we were low on numbers, we were not low of enthusiasm! The parents (and some staff) joined in and commented that it was very useful.

Once again, thank you to staff who supported the crèche and those who attended for their own CPD.

SIMS Training Part 2 - Mrs Radley

On Tuesday morning, I was out of the office and across town in Top Valley for my second training session on SIMS. There were just two of us on the training course this week so we got a personalised course. We started with a quick refresher on our knowledge from last week’s training session before starting to work our way through the work book for the part 2 course. We then investigated the links menu on individual student records, had ago at creating quick letters and attaching a letters to a student record. We looked at the Agency function in SIMS and created an agency and assigned pupils to it. We then practised running some basic reports that we might get asked to run in the future. We were then showed how to edit an existing report and design our own report. Again the time just seemed to fly by and before we finished for the morning we had a quick look at the diary function in SIMS. I felt like I learned a lot more about the system we use on a daily basis.
